Understanding Farm-Related Injuries: A Virtual Field Trip of Common Agricultural Hazards and Injury Etiology

This discussion and virtual field trip will deepen attendee knowledge about common agricultural related injuries. Information presented will be relevant for family physicians and other health professionals who care for patients in agricultural communities and/or see patients from these communities in emergency room and referral settings. The session will emphasize injury risks that result from the combination of hazardous farm equipment designed with exposed moving parts and the human tendency to follow the “path of least resistance.” Attendees will gain a greater understanding of injury etiology along with greater ability to provide compassionate care, improve patient engagement and promote injury prevention.

Objectives:

  • Understand the mechanisms, hazards and circumstances of common agricultural injuries.

  • Improve the ability to relate and develop rapport with patients who have incurred agricultural-equipment related injury.

  • Encourage farm injury prevention on both the part of agricultural workers and health professionals through expanded awareness of equipment-and-operator related contributors to injury.

Beyond “Just a Phase”: Understanding Pediatric Behavioral Disorders

Pediatric behavioral disorders—including Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder, behavioral manifestations of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) and Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood—are among the most common and most misidentified conditions family physicians encounter. This session moves beyond ADHD, depression and anxiety to equip primary care physicians with practical, evidence-based frameworks for diagnosing and managing these disorders, supported by current AAFP and AAP guidelines. Attendees will leave with clarity on when to treat behaviorally, how to initially ponder medication and how to direct families to the best educational resources.

Objectives:

  • Differentiate the diagnostic criteria, clinical presentations and comorbidity profiles of ODD, Conduct Disorder, DMDD, ASD-related behavioral problems and Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood from one another and from normative developmental behavior, using DSM-5 criteria and American Academy of Family Physicians/American Academy of Pediatrics clinical guidelines.

  • Select appropriate first-line behavioral and pharmacological interventions for each disorder, including identifying specific medication targets, FDA-approved agents and off-label options with their evidence quality, dosing ranges and monitoring requirements.

  • Apply structured referral thresholds and recommend vetted parent and provider educational resources—including AACAP Facts for Families, HealthyChildren.org, the CDC behavioral health toolkit and Child Mind Institute—to support ongoing family engagement and management between visits.
